Considering we aren't really having cake in the traditional sense at all, I can't understand it. But it suits some people, I believe. Although apart from you get more cake, I don't really get why the groom can't just help choose the actual cake/take a day off from sports teams etc....
I got engaged in August 2008 and am starting to plan my wedding. I am from the UK, but have been living in India for the last 2 years. I like the warm but miss Tesco, wine, diet coke that doesn't taste funny and my friends and family.

An extra cake that's often chocolate or decorated in a way the groom chooses (like with the logo of his fave sports team).
I believe it's just an excuse to have more cake. A tradition I get get behind.
